LG LRE3012SB touch pad buttons not working.
« on: June 17, 2014, 10:07:18 AM »
Have a LG LRE3012SB electric range, the start and clock buttons no longer work properly. They function very intermittently. Sometimes they work right away, sometimes you have play with them for 5 minutes, sometimes they just never function. I did a reset per LG tech; unplug range and hold start for 30 sec. It seemed to fix the issue for a couple weeks, but then started acting up again. Is this a common issue on these? Is there anything i can check that might be an easy fix. Or am I looking a Keypad or possibly PCB replacement ( neither of which are available anymore)?

Unplug range

Slide range out

Remove back access panel(s)

Pull/disconnect the *flat ribbon connectors* from the Main Board

Re-connect and lock both ribbon connectors (Communications Cables)

Re-install rear access panel and plug in range

Test range controls---to verify that the keypad(s) respond to input.

Thank you, that seems to have cured it for the time being. We will see if it starts acting up again or not.

Caused by oxidation (and/or loose fit) on the ribbon connector.

In most cases---since the range likely will never be shipped/handled/delivered/re-installed a second time---this symptom will not occur again.

The contacts really didn't have any corrosion or oxidation on them, i cleaned them anyways though. The ribbons weren't really loose either.

<<<The ribbons weren't really loose either.>>>

If the Control Panel is now responsive to commands/input---then the connection was less-than-ideal ("loose").

Sorry to burst your balloon, but I have to do the pull the back and reinsert the ribbon cables every 6 months or so.  Cleaned, checked, inspected, just a poor design.

I usually clean the cables when I remove then and it usually restores them.

Try adding something into the ribbon connector to *improve* the quality/tightness of the ribbon connection to the PCB (cut a section of a matchbook, for example)

Verify which section of the ribbon connector---makes connection (do not add it there)

NOTE:

Your situation is *not* typical.

99.99% of customers/owners that needed the ribbon connector removed/re-installed to improve/resume surface burner control function---never had an issue again.

Like it or not---you're one of the .01%

Example: If you had Firestone/Bridgestone tires on your vehicle that were recalled due to a manufacturing"defect"---don't go assuming that your new/improved tires won't *ever* go "pop" on the highway. Though the odds are very low---it *could* still happen/occur.
