Can this be anything other than freon leak?
« on: June 13, 2014, 12:36:22 PM »
A GE Profile Arctica side-by-side (about 13 years old) - first the freezer wasn't cold enough and the fridge side was freezing. This went on for a bit and only recently I finally got to investigating it and ended up replacing the broken damper door mechanism.

This did not fix the warm freezer problem. All diagnostic tests report normal (fans, thermistors). All fans seem to be operating normally. The fridge seems to be on (the compressor) *all the time* and now that I think about it - this has gone on for a while. The freezer isn't cold-enough to keep things frozen in it although I don't know the exact temp, but there is water in the ice tray. The frost pattern on the evaporator looks like the attached picture. I defrosted it the best I could with a hair dryer, but this morning there is still no change. The defrost heater checks out at least for continuity. The compressor is more hot than warm to the touch.

Can this be anything other than low refrigirant/refrigirant leak? Will this likely require replacing the entire sealed system? Is it worth repairing?

If its running all the time and that is want the freezer looks like with the frost pattern looking like that its all over with. And i guess this is a picture you took right after you took panel off.

Yes, the picture was taken right after, although I was playing with it for about 40 minutes to an hour with doors mostly open. Running tests mostly. That said, there wasn't much in the drip tray, so if there was more on the evaporator, it wasn't much, or I would've noticed.

Maybe put panel back and let it run 24 hours and post another picture.Looks like its all over with.Did you have heavy frost from top to bottom before you use hair dryer or was it frosted only half way.

It is all back together. I can take a look tonight - it would've been 24 hours. But the freezer is relatively warm. I did not see any frost at all except for what is in the picture. I put it together hoping the freezing (perhaps caused by it working too hard because of the damper door being broken) was clogging the evaporator and once I defrosted it it may work again. No luck though.

Yes it is. As I said, now that I think about it it's been doing that for a while. I just wasn't paying attention.

Thank you. This confirms what I thought.
