Maytag MAH8700AWW tub banging
« on: June 09, 2014, 07:31:04 PM »
I have a 2005 Maytag 27" front load washer. Two years ago the drum started banging around in the tub. I took it apart and the assay-frame shaft was broken. I replaced it with a new one and everything was fine for a while. But two months ago the machine started banging again. This time it's not the drum banging against the tub, it's the entire tub swinging wildly on the spin cycle. The machine shakes excessively and starts to walk across the room. I took the back panel off while it was spinning and could see the pulley wobbling.

Now I disassembled it again thinking I'd see something obviously broken. But everything looks ok upon inspection. the assay-frame shaft is not broken, nor is the pulley.

Any idea what could be wrong, or how to continue troubleshooting?

Thanks,
Joe

It has to be the bearings then.

Now that I have the machine disassembled, is there any way I can test the bearings to be sure that's the problem? I'd like to be sure before I spend $185 on the new bottom tub assembly.

When I turn the tub bearings with my fingers it does not feel loose, and it turns smoothly in both directions. When I put the outer tub on the drum assembly it spins smoothly without any wobble.

Do you think it could be the shocks? And do you know any way I could test them to be sure?

When you said you saw the pulley wobble, I thought bearings.  The pulley could be bad, but that should be pretty obvious.  With the inner basket installed in the rear tub, check for side play. There should be virtually no play.  Check for a worn shaft where the bearings sit.

The shaft is part of the assembly I replaced 2 years ago, and it's not worn. The pulley looks fine when I inspect it visually. Here's a video that shows the amount of play in the pulley when it is tightened down on the shaft. Do you think there is too much wobble and the pulley needs to be replaced?

the pulley should not move at all like it does. Pulley should have no play when pushed onto the shaft

Check the wires on the motor, one coming loose will cause that type of movement.
