Sears washer transmission won't engage into posts

I replaced the clutch assemble and in doing so I cannot get the transmission inserted high enough in order to secure it to the 3 posts.  The brake shoes appear fine and nothing appears to be binding.  It simply won't go any higher.

Sometimes you have to twirl the clutch plate around until the brake pawl engages the clutch pin.  Rotate the clutch gently while lifting the tranny...it will click into place when you line up the slot.

I believe it's engaged correctly since I heard it lock in.  I can rotate the clutch plate clockwise and I can see the clutch pawl rotate as well.  I have the washer down on it side so that it's easier to see and I wasn't sure what else could prevent the transmission from going a bit higher.

No wonder!

Stand it back up and remove the cabinet, then lean it against the wall towards its back so you can work the tranny up from the front floor. It's easier to install with the motor removed.
