removing waxy buildup in bottom of agitator

How do you remove the waxy buildup at bottom of the agitator.  Pick & shovel?

Use very hot water poured down into the center, followed by a thorough brushing. I use a long white brush similar to the one below, but the generic coil-cleaning brush you see at most appliance stores will do. Avoiding liquid fabric softener entirely is the best advice, as the ingredients can make fabrics waterproof and un-cleanable over time. Dryer sheets are less invasive and messy.
