Whirlpool F/F in door ice maker "clacking" noises
« on: July 03, 2008, 08:28:21 PM »
Fridge/freezer works fine but when in-door ice maker is switched on a loud "clacking" noise starts within 1 - 30 minutes and doesn't stop. It seems to come from the yellow/orange relay on the main circuit board (lower left back).
The optics seem to pass the diagnostics, there is water in the ice maker, I've been following the current "Whirlpool ice maker woes" thread and my machine looks identical except there is no manual switch on the Infra-red receiver board.
Following a defrost and re-start the ice maker will sometimes make one load of ice before the "clacking" noises start again.
Any ideas gratefully received. Anyone know where I can get a full circuit diagram for this model? Thanks

Model Number: S20B RWW20 - A/G

Try unplugging the water valve leads and see if it makes a difference. What voltage does this refrigerator use in France? (The Euro model number won't cross-reference in our database)

240volt, 50cps, same as UK models in effect. Will try removing water valve leads, thanks, Dave Walsh.

Perhaps one of our techs with Euro experience should jump in at this point. Most of us are only familiar with models that work on 120v/60Hz. This is a different aminal.

My European model (S20B RWW20 - A/G) does look EXACTLY like the photos of the ED5SHAXMB10 model in the current "Whirlpool woes" thread: the volts are different but won't the innards be much the same?

Since you compared the model you have to the ED5SHAXMB10, perhaps the diagram would help you anyway, despite voltage issues.  Try punching that model into the lookup here on this forum and see what turns up.

Have disconnected ice maker water control valve leads (black and brown) as suggested by "Repair Man"
After switching on ice maker got one load of cubes and after 35 minutes clacking noise re-appeared (and of course no water in icemaker).  With power still on gave orange relay a couple of smart whacks with a screwdriver handle and clacking stopped, now been silent for 15 mins. As it's now 1.30 in the morning am going to bed now!
What does the "clacking" noise imply if it happens with the water control valve leads dis-connected, thanks?

Does this relay control power to the water valve for the fill? You can always jumper from L1 on the icemaker harness to the lead wire going to the valve to see if this causes the sound.

Repeated removing leads to water valve, "clacking" still present.
Am assuming the orange relay controls the water valve but do not know this for sure.
Repair-man: Where is L1 on the ice maker harness; is it actually in the ice maker itself? There are two wires to the water valve - you say "jumper L1 to the lead wire going to the water valve" - could you explain exactly what I should do.
Thanks

Have you tried a new board yet...? I would.

WP usually puts the diagram on back of the fridge   (USA models at least)
