Whirlpool direct drive agitates but no spin
« on: September 20, 2007, 07:47:39 PM »
Hello,

I have a Whirlpool washing machine that fills and agitates but will not spin.  The selector switch also sometimes makes a buzzing sound.

Any ideas?  :)

Regards,
Phil

Is the washer draining?  Or is it going dead for drain and spin???

Actually I will clarify.  I'm not 100% sure what it does if left to go through a complete cycle.  If I stop it and switch it over to spin it will drain.

Ok need to sort of stand there and see what happens when it stops agitating without you touching the washer, tell us of the pauses in the timer and what happens after each pause when it stops agitatimg...or if it just goes dead and sits there till you open and close the lid...

It went through a complete cycle all the way to completion.  It did not spin but did agitate.

During the spin cycle open the lid all the way and close it again. Does the washer start to spin then?

Pegi asked about the pause, did you notice any?

The timer should pause the washer once the washer is done pumping the water out and before it starts the spin cycle.

If there is no pause (the motor stops running) then the tranny can not shift into spin at the end of the drain cycle.

You can create this pause by lifting the lid during the spin cycle too.
If the timer pauses and the washer does not go into spin when the motor starts running again then the tranny will need to be replaced.

How old is the washer?

I will need to check again for the pause.  On the full cycle, I just let it run on it's own and did not watch it.

To create the pause by lifting the lid, how would I know that the timer has paused?  The motor/noise does shut off when the lid is lifted.

The washer is about 4 years old.

Thanks! :)

Any additional feedback on this?  I have been out of town since last week, and will get a chance to run another "test" tonight.  ;)

If the transmission is the culprit, can I replace it myself?

If not the transmission, what else?

Many thanks in advance.  O0

This is one of the easiest washers to replace a tranny in.

OK here is what I observed.  Started cycle, machine filled.  Agitated for a while, paused, then began to drain.  No spin.

philhyde,

After the water all drains out there should be another pause were the motor stop running. Then the motor should kick in again and the washer should spin.

If you do not have the pause after the water is all pumped out then I would replace the timer.

If the washer does not pause on it's own after the water is pumped out you should be able to lift the washer lid making it pause and when you close it the washer should go into spin. This will tell you that the tranny is ok, if it spins.

If you do have the correct pause after the water is pumped out and the washer just does not go into spin after it starts again after the pause then you will need to replace the tranny.

What is the model number of your washer?
