Whirlpool dryer kicks ground fault
« on: May 10, 2014, 01:05:13 PM »
I have a whirlpool gas dryer. Lgr584seq5. When you push the start button the ground fault outlet kicks to off. The gf outlet runs the washer with out a worry. The breaker in my fuse box is fine. I tried the outlet with only the dryer plugged in it and the result was the same as soon as I pushed the dryer start button the gf kicked to off. Help please :'(

most likely your outlet is a 15amp outlet. If the motor on the dryer is pulling anyware near 15amps on a surge(typically start up) it will trip the gfci... you would need the wiring upgraded to support a 20amp GFCI outlet.

I'll try that the ground fault still seems to work with the washer though. That's the way it was set up 10 years ago. So maybe the gf is partialy working for the washer.

Around here code does not require a GFI on a major appliance. I would switch it out for a regular outlet.

Major appliances i.e. washer, dryer, fridge, dishwashers, etc are not supposed to be on a GFCI outlet and should have their own dedicated circuit. That being said you just have to chase down the ground

The ground fault is what the washer and dryer are plugged into. And that goes to a breaker in the breaker box.  I will change the gf to a regular outlet. But why wouldn't the washer kick off the gf outlet. Do gf outlets loose efficiency and go from 15 amps to 10 then 5 then not work at all. Just asking.

quick way to check amp pull is to plug a "kill a watt" meter in to the outlet plug the appliance in to the "kill a watt" and set it to amps.
If it pulls close the the peak amps on the 15amp circut it will trip it.
