Drain solenoid chatter
« on: April 02, 2014, 08:55:12 AM »
My GE dishwasher is getting some severe chatter from the drain solenoid. Everything else works fine and it drains fine, it's just extremely loud while it drains. I have already replaced the solenoid kit to no avail. After some research it looks like it could be caused by whatever is supplying the power to the solenoid. There is no traditional control board on this basic model GE(ADW1100N10WW), but there is a timer(WD21X10350). I'm not sure if the timer could be the cause or if there is something else. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Check the wiring in the junction box on the lower right hand side. Verify it is wired correctly to the power cord. Black is hot. White is neutral. Green is ground. And verify your outlet is wired correctly. The little slot is hot. The larger one is neutral. And the bottom is ground.

Thanks for the reply.

Everything is wired properly. The dishwasher ran fine for two years, and only recently started having this issue. When I first started having this issue I pulled out the motor to troubleshoot, and when I hooked it back up I made sure the wiring was correct.

I would suspect twitching contacts inside the timer.

The solenoid on these is only activated for a couple of seconds. If you look at the pump picture you'll notice the solenoid pulls a flap up that forces the water out the drain hole. Once the solenoid closes the flapper water pressure from the pump holds it up until it's drained. If the pump intake is clogged there might not be enough pressure to hold the flap or there might be crap on the flap causing it to not close, making things noisy as the flap vibrates.

I have already checked for clogs and found none. The flap is plastic, but the sound I hear is clearly made from metal. The solenoid stays active during the entire drain cycle. I can watch the solenoid vibrate while it's active, it looks like the arm is bouncing around inside the solenoid while it's active.

If 120vac, hook a fused jumper to it and see if it acts the same. If so, timer shoukd be fine. Does it have a spring to pull flap back down? If timer is ok, I sould suspect spring or solenoid. O0

The new timer did not fix the issue. At this point I have replaced the solenoid kit and the timer, any ideas on what else could cause this?
