Whirlpool WTW4800xq2
« on: March 26, 2014, 03:17:28 PM »

Has anybody disassembled a gearbox from the new Whirlpool belt drive washer design? I have been wondering what supports the basket. The ony thing I can conclude is that flimsy looking gear case must contain the Celcon gear box mounted with a top and bottom anti-friction bearing. Is that the arrangement? Regards ???

Yes, that is the arrangement. I have not seen one disassembled in person but have seen cutaway views of it. The transmission is a simple planetary gear system using Celcon gears. There is a plastic "windowed" ring around the gearbox used for the rpm optical sensor.

:)Thank you fairbanks56 for your reply. I would like to see a cut away of the gearbox. How mechanical things work has always interested me, especially if I have the machine. I have been trying to size up our wtw4800xq2 as far as future repairs and have decided it will be relatively easy to work on. From looking at it, I don't think the spin tube has bearings like the old direct drive machine. The dryer I can keep going forever, nothing to them. Regards

Ok, here's the images for the VMW transmission. Bearings are not shown but you can see how the planetary gear system works. Pretty simple. No brake on these machines so tub does move somewhat in agitation cycle. You can see the windowed ring that makes/breaks the path of opto rpm sensor that is part of the shift actuator.

Eric: I know this is an old thread, but I've been looking all over for this very cutaway---only to find that it is no longer viewable! Could you repost it or somehow direct me to a source for either photos or a discussion of how it works? Thanks in advance---.

May I ask one question? I have studied the photos carefully, but one thing is still not clear: Does the carrier for the planetary gears rotate freely around the agitator shaft or is it rigidly attached. I can't really tell if there is a journal there or if the two pieces are compression fitted. Thanks.
