Which hose clamp pliers do the pros use?
« on: March 23, 2014, 09:17:57 PM »
Just wanted to get some feedback from the appliance repair techs out there. I'm looking for a good pair of pliers made specifically for removing hose clamps. For example, water pump hose clamps.

I've found this, this, this and these so far.

Any advise or recommendations?

I use to use the sears version of the slip join pliers you posted with the blue handles, but after so many years of doing this I can just use a regular pliers on them now.

It should've occurred to me that most pros probably just use regular pliers. That's why their pros. Maybe what I'm looking for are pliers that make it easier to remove hose clamps for non-pros.

If I was to buy one again I would probably give that Knipex one a try. I have a few other Knipex Cobra pliers and love them.

I still carry my old Sears Craftsman hose clamp pliers around with me, just have not used it for ever.
Will try and remember to post a photo of it tomorrow just for the fun of it.

Wow, didn't see those pliers. They're called "water pump pliers". Are the specific to any particular water pump, like for washing machine water pumps?

Not really sure why they are called water pump pliers, but I find them extremely useful. I carry the Knipex 8701150 6-Inch Cobra Pliers in a pouch on my belt. I posted a review of it on Amazon along with some images.

I use the bottom set with the red handles. They ends are adjustable so you can use them in any position, even head on which you will find hard to do with the plier type..

@Bailey, have you found that those pliers are durable? I've read reviews about them being bad quality.

There's a guy on the crew that has some vise grips with a round thing welded on the end to grab the tabs on the hose clamps. I think he said he got it from a local appliance parts house. They work really well.

Bottom set . The only problem I have ever had was the snap rings that hold the tips fell out once. 30 years old and used a lot.

That's very reassuring to know they hold up so well. Hopefully they're still made with the same kind if quality from 30 years ago.

So far based on everyone's feedback the last pair seem to be the way to go.
