Maytag gas dryer won't heat up MDG308DAWW
« on: March 09, 2014, 11:29:45 PM »
My Maytag gas dryer MDG308DAWW would not heat up.   The igniter would glow then flames comes on for 2 - 3 seconds and shuts off.  All the fuses checked OK.   The solenoid coil was also replaced.   What else could it be.   Please help!!!!!!!!        any suggestion would greatly appreciated!

You replaced both coils?

Did you clean the vent, fan and blower housing? Also check the lint screen area in the door to make sure it's free of lint build up.

Yes, I replaced both coils.   I Ohm out the original coils that I removed and it reads:  (3 prongs) pin 1-2 = 1370,   pin 2-3 = 1932,   pin 1-3 = 562 and the (2 prongs) pin 4-5 = 1283.   The resistance are similar between the new and old coil, I guess the coils is not the problem.   I also had the front panel removed while testing for the flame so ventilation shouldn't be a factor.   What else could I check???   Could the valve itself got stuck or jam???

Coils often checked fine with a ohm meter when they are bad, but you already replaced them with new ones so that should not be the problem.

I would not count on the dryer running correctly with the front off as the air flow will be all screwed up.

I would check the amp draw on the ignitor, it maybe week. As the ignitor starts to glow the amp draw opens the gas valve.
It says on the side of the gas valve how many amps it takes to open it. That or just replace the ignitor and try it.

Gas dryers need the door to be on or they will not pull air thru the burner and the flame will burn upright instead of horizontal and the high limit thermostat will cut off the burner prematurely. Man that's a long sentence!

Test the "Flame sensor"
Remove the sensor...

You should have a "closed circuit" zero or very low resistance @ room temp, no light on sensor window (place a piece of electrical tape over window)

Re test with a strong light (100 watt bulb, sunlight, etc...)
on the window the circuit should test "open" high to infinite resistance.

The igniter glows and the gas ignites, so the flame sensor is working. Flame sensor must be closed to apply full voltage to the igniter and then the sensor must open in order for the secondary gas valve to open.

As the ignitor starts to glow the amp draw opens the gas valve. It says on the side of the gas valve how many amps it takes to open it. That or just replace the ignitor and try it.

The primary valve opens as soon as the dryer is turned on while the secondary valve remains closed. The flame sensor is normally closed and is in parallel with the secondary valve solenoid coil so that valve solenoid is effectively shorted out. The secondary valve cannot open until the flame sensor opens. The heat from the glowing igniter causes the flame sensor to open. This removes full power to the igniter and applies power to the secondary valve solenoid causing the secondary gas valve to open. The still hot igniter ignites the gas. The heat from the burning gas keeps the flame sensor open. The secondary valve solenoid coil is now in series with the igniter. A faulty igniter (resistance too high or a break that keeps opening/closing) can cause the secondary valve to shut off. I agree on replacing the igniter.

Great explanation fairbank56!

Don't see much for gas appliances and was thinking of checking amps on a gas stove valve, not dryer. Sorry for my confusion.
I never check amp draw on a dryer ignitor. I just go out to my truck and get a new one to slap in there. :)

Thanks again fairbank56, great post!

I want to thank you all for such a great input!!!!     The igniter had a reading of 114 ohms.   The flame sensor is at 0.   It appears that both components have a good continuity.   I'll try replacing the igniter first.   If that doesn't work then I'm gonna throw in the towel on this one.
