pilot not igniting burner on gas furnace ???
« on: February 24, 2014, 03:32:19 AM »
From time to time I have to re-light the pilot on my 1966 gas furnace.

Tonite I noticed the temp was low and re-lit it.

Just now I checked again and temp is 69, with thermostat set at 70.

Went to check furnace before going to bed.

Pilot is lit, blower running.  So I thought, its still in cool-down mode.  But THEN I realized that if so, the house temp would be ABOVE 70.

So is it possible that the old pilot is not igniting the burners sometimes, and eventually the valve shuts the gas off and the blower stops?

I got my long-necked lighter and ignited the lighter and moved it towards the burners, but I blinked or looked away or just didn't llok closely enough and I don't know if I lit them or if they were already lit but the fan still on low.

I know this is an old thread, but you have a 48 year old heater?  Me thinks its time to have the chambers check for cracks!  Yikes this is an old furnace!

Please have it inspected if you haven't already!

I have to agree, I would definitely get it checked out.

If everything checks out (no cracks) some things that are very easy to try:
- if it has a thermocouple at the pilot, you could try to clean it or replace it.
- try using canned air to blow out the burners.  Dust can get into the orifices and cause one to not light.

I have never worked on a furnace this old, and only one property I work at has standing pilot, but it might be worth trying
