Kenmore 70 series? washer wont spin after belt replacement
« on: February 03, 2014, 09:07:44 AM »
Well, im pretty sure it's a 70 series, its just an ole pita.

Anyways, the belt snapped after the gf threw a load in there. The belt was old, and by old i mean this thing probably should have been changed years ago, who knows were renting. essentially, it was dry rotted so bad you can bend it and it breaks. Okay, so i followed some instructions i found here, unbolting and turning all these things (also who names these... really, you named a part a wig wag....) and they were horrible instructions. But alas, i got everything off and able to slip the new belt in where the washer was on the rod near the clutch "yoke"? Essentially, i work on cars and it looked like a clutch with 4 springs and right under it was a rod that connects a plate to the transmission. slipped it on, made sure the bearing was still on a rod and started mounting and bolting it back together. Before flipping the washer back up right, i turned the pulleys to make sure everything spun and the belt was tight. It spun and all pullys were moving. Now i hooked all the lines back up, plugged her back in the wall and turned it on spin. Nothing but a nice humming sound. Crawled behind the washer and the motor is spinning but the belt was not. The belt is pretty tight but still has some slack, same slack as a serpentine belt. I turned the pulley some, but its kinda hard to turn on the transmission.

I also should mention that before putting water in and while it was still tipped over at about a 60* angle, the motor was spinning all the pulleys fine, just with water in the washing machine it just spins.

Now key things i wont leave out, the belt was bought on a sunday so now legitimate places were open so she bought it at an auto parts store and the belt was the same length, just not the same width. Could this belt be the culprit causing the motor to spin and the belt to just skip along the pulleys even with the correct tension? or did i screw something else up.

Thanks in advance,
Kb

You must use a appliance belt on this for sure and the factory part is #95405.http://www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-drive-belt-95405-ap2914771.html And you may of not install it right also.

Cool ordered the belt, and can you explain in more detail of the incorrect installation? As in random things that i might not have gone over properly

If you order the F.S.P belt it comes with instructions.Did you take all the long 1/2 bolts out or just the one by the spring? There would be 3.

Main thing here is you have to start out with correct part and not a aftermarket appliance belt. You only need to remove one of those 1/2 inch bolts to install belt and thats the one by the spring.Less problematic for you.

I believe you are referring to the three transmission mount bolts? if so yes, i removed all three of those when i pulled the transmission down a bit

Ha! Wish i knew that before hand. I think i'm going to attempt this again, once the belt gets here and undo the tranny bolts (about a turn) and put the washer right side up, activate a short brief spin cycle, and see if i can get the tranny to line up that way. Also thank you so much for your quick assistance! It is very much appreciated!

The method I use to replace the belt is to pull the spin cam bar out of the clutch shaft so that the clutch shaft can be lowered for belt clearance, versus loosening the other two transmission bolts and dropping the transmission. This is listed as the alternative method on the instructions that come with the belt. Don't know what model you have but if it is one with the plastic T bearing and steel ball on the agitator shaft, make sure the ball doesn't fall out when you lower the transmission if you do it that way. If you put it back together without the ball, it won't spin. If you use the drop the transmission method, you should only retighten the bolts after the washer is back in the upright position. Here's the belt replacement instructions.

belt will be here tomorrow. Got the speedy shipping. Got home from work, lined up the tranny and all the pulleys actually pulled and spun the tub.(Actually put everything together right!) however, the auto belt wasnt strong enough to spin all the pulleys and tub so it just slips. But i'll be swapping belts with your removal of the one bolt method now.

Also, yes its a plastic t bearing and i made sure not to lose that metal ball

alright, i have everything mounted proper belt, but now she wont spin. I made sure that little ball bearing was still in there and it starts to spin slowly with no clothes or water and then just stops and makes a humming sound. Any suggestions?

Make sure the belt is really tight. I always used a big screwdriver wedged against the motor shaft and the motor bracket to pry it over while tightening the nut.
