Kenmore 70 Series gas dryer won't start
« on: January 12, 2014, 05:40:08 AM »
Hello. I have a Kenmore 70 series dryer model 77732791 77732 approximately 15 years old.  It won't start.  Has power to dryer. Light on inside is on when door is open.  When you push the start button all it does is click, and won't start.  Curious where I should start troubleshooting or if you had an idea of what the problem and cure would be.  I did replace the motor about 3 or 4 years ago.  Thanks for your time and any help.

Check continuity on the door switch between white and blue with switch in closed position and check continuity on the push to start switch.

i don't have a wiring diagram for that model but some of the older gas dryers when the thermal fuse blows the motor will not come on.if not possible timer problem hope you have a diagram that will help you.http://www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-dryer-thermal-fuse-3392519-ap3132867.html

In the gas dryers, the thermal fuse is in  the gas valve circuit, not the motor circuit. There is no protective device in the motor circuit other than the motor's internal thermal overload. Some models have a belt switch in the motor circuit but this model does not.

This is a older gas dryer Eric and some, a very small amount of them will have the thermal fuse that will be in series with the motor.I guess you never ran into this?

This one does not, I have the wiring diagram. This is a 97 model. I have a lot of wiring diagrams for models older than this but I have not come across one that has the fuse in the motor circuit on a gas dryer. Do you have one to share? (Whirlpool model)

No Eric i do not have one to share with you and it would be on a older model than 97 model but would be on one that would be about the time when they started putting in the thermal fuse.Like you said 99percent  or more it controls the heat on a gas dryer but they are out there. 40 years fixing appliance in mostly gas where i live.Just something to keep in mine on a older gas dryer.Maybe someone else would want to jump in here and say something.

The point is, the OP's dryer does not have one in the motor circuit so there's no point in him checking or replacing it. If you've seen them in older dryer's, then fine, I believe you. This is why I only give advice if I have access to the wiring diagram or tech sheet. Otherwise, I'm just best guessing unless I have direct experience with that particular model.

I don't have the pdf's but do have jpg photo's. The correct wiring diagram is 3406691 which is the first photo. It is low resolution and a bit blurry but still readable. Second photo is 3401736 and is essentially the same but is high res and clear.

I found the problem. After taking the front off and the drum out I found the start of the problem.  There was a 1/4" buildup of lint and somehow the wires that come off the motor wiring harness some of them arced across and melted some of the wires together.  I have since blown and vacuumed everything out and tried to figure out some of the wiring.  I have a new harness with the red, black, blue, white/red green/yellow, and red.  My questions may seem obvious to some of you but I gather the black goes to black, blue to blue, white/red to white red, and green/yellow is ground, from there I'm lost.  Where do the 2 red wires in positions 1 & 2 go?  I wired everything as I described above and as of right now have the 2 red wires capped off.  Dryer seems to run fine.  Is this correct or what do I need to do? Again thanks for all the help, input and time you've given me.

The red wires are only used in the electric heat version of this dryer, not the gas heat version. You did fine.

Thanks for all you guys help and tips.  I do have another question, what on earth would have caused all those wires to melt down and arc current?  I guess we're lucky for kenmores safety controls those sparks could have easily caught all that lint on fire and who knows what else from there.  The lint looked pretty black and halfway singed as it was.  Thanks again
