Whirlpool WED5810SW0 Dryer won't start
« on: December 31, 2013, 03:32:14 PM »
My dryer recently quit working, and I'm having trouble figuring out why.  I've checked the door switch, the timer can be heard cutting off when the door is opened.  I've tried replacing the timer switch as well as the start switch with no luck.  I've also tried bypassing the thermal fuse and still nothing.  What else could I check or replace that may be the culprit?  The start button will click when pressed if the timer dial is set to any cycle, but the dryer does not start.  Once it's pressed and it clicks, it will not do so again until the timer is turned off and back on again.  It seemed to be working fine prior to it quitting.

Does motor hum at all or is it quiet? If all quiet, your not getting power to motor, if it hums, motor switch is probably bad not providing power to the start winding. You are getting power to the timer motor and push-to-start relay. Check continuity of white wire between timer and motor connector as well as blue wire between start relay and motor connector.

Timer motor runs, start relay works, both run from same 120 volt leg (L-1 & Neutral) as does motor. L-2 is only for heater circuit.

Hey Guys, I have the exact same issue as the originator of this post.....same model Whirlpool dryer.    I hope it's okay that I resurrected this thread.

I've checked the Door Switch, Thermal Fuse, Timer, and Start Switch - all seem to be okay.    I've also checked the continuity of the White & Blue wires as fairbank56 suggested - they tested good.    120/240 volts are present at the power entry point.

I checked power at the timer, over to the Start Switch and then down to the Blue wire at the Motor - I have 120 volts at the motor (blue wire) when I 'start' the dryer, but the motor doesn't turn.  I don't hear the motor making any noise (humming) at all when the 120 volts is present.

At this point, I'm thinking the motor is shot, but I wanted to see if you folks could think of anything else that might prevent the motor from starting......I'd hate to order a new motor only to find that something else was actually causing the issue.     And I'm not so sure how common it is for a motor to completely die without 'acting up' before doing so.   I can turn the motor by hand with some slight resistance.

I don't know if it matters, but the dryer was working fine this morning.    It dried one load and it was in the 'wrinkle guard' mode.   It never started again once the second load was put in it.

Looks like you got power to motor ,but you need to know if you have a complete circuit through to neutral.Wiring diagram if needed.

Thanks!  I didn't get a chance yet to test the motor, but can I assume there's no other reason for it not to work based upon my other findings?    I'm just wondering if there's any other requirements needed to be met (that I'm over-looking) before the motor would start.

Ugh!!
I installed the new motor and still nothing.
I noticed there are 2 "Guard Switches" on the wiring diagram - what exactly are these?   I have covers off.....are there switches that are detecting this, and preventing the motor from turning on??

Looking at wiring diagram, put timer in Time- Regular Cycle and you should have continuity between Timer Switch Terminals   T  and  W  take at least one wire off Do you?

Put timer on 60 minute cycle to check.
