Maytag Atlantis Not Draining or Spinning
« on: June 19, 2008, 09:15:17 AM »
My Maytag Atlantis top-loader occasionally will not drain or spin.  In each occasion, the timer just stops with the tub not drained or spun.  When you back the timer up and run through the "spin" portion of the cycle again, the washer will usually go through the wash cycle and drain and spin the clothes.  At first, this problem only happened on the "normal" cycle, so the wife started using the "permanent press" cycle instead.  However, the problem has now started happening on the "permanent press" cycle as well.

I'm thinking that the timer needs to be replaced, but I wanted to check in with you guys before I ran out and spent $80 (non-refundable) on a new timer.

From what you describe I would say it is the timer.

Thanks JW!  By the way, does anyone have a link to a service manual for this model?  I couldn't find one online.

If it were me, I would rather try a new lid switch kit first before I spent money on a new timer. Maytag redesigned the lid switch and its plunger to a better working part a couple of years ago, and it might solve your problem. It's certainly cheaper.

I have a copy of the Maytag Atlantis Manual that I will share with you.

Well, I already bought the timer - just haven't had the chance to install it yet.  Thanks for the service manual link Repair-man!  However, it doesn't cover the MAVT634AWW model.  Specifically, the timer seems to be different on my model.

Does anyone have a service manual that covers the MAVT634AWW model?

The manual is not necessarily supposed to "cover" your specific timer, but has everything else  that you need to know, including the lid switch.  If you just need to know how to release the knob in front, pop the outer cap off the timer. It has a locking pin that will allow you to remove the knob and the outer dial. The timer itself is held on at the back by a single screw and a white plastic tab that lifts up to release the timer. With the knob and dial off, the timer will slide to the left and lift out if you release the tab.

Be sure and let us know if the timer actually solves this problem, as I am still convinced of a lid switch issue.

Thanks Repair-Man!  If the lid switch were the problem, wouldn't opening and closing the lid a couple times get the switch to close/contact and allow the cycle to continue through the drain and spin portion?  I've tried that and it's never restarted the cycle.  Is there any other way to trouble shoot the lid switch further to rule it out before I install the timer.  I may be able to get my money back on the timer since I haven't opened up the packaging yet.  Also, I assume that the timer would stop if the lid switch loses contact - correct?

Thanks,

Dan

Sounds more like a bad Timer...

If during a Cycle, the Lid is open (or the Lid Switch is bad) the washer Motor won't Agitate nor Spin, and the Timer motor won't advance.

The Lid Switch is designed so if it fails (in a certain way), it'll blow an internal one-time fuse.

If you could do some voltage measurements...

Timer advance
« Reply #9 on: June 25, 2008, 11:35:12 AM »
I believe there was mention of the timer going all the way thru the cycle in the first post, and that it was necessary to re-start the cycle again to make it work. Since the timer does advance, I suppose logic says that the timer must have erratic contacts to the motor bus and that the lid switch might be OK.

I probably made my first post confusing as I went on to explain that I would back the timer up prior to the spin part of the cycle and restart the timer.  I'll go ahead and replace the timer.  Thanks for all the help!  I'll report back with the results - good or bad.
