Deep Sockets for Carry-in Toolbag
« on: December 28, 2013, 02:23:44 AM »
Do any of you guys have deep sockets that are part of your daily carry-in?  If so, what size are the most commonly used?  Do you carry standard and metric?  The whole set or only the most used?

AJ, I saw in the gearwrench pics gallery, you have 3 sockets.  But can't see the sizes.

Trying to lighten the tool bag as much I can.

Thanks for the help.

And want to wish you all a Happy New Year !   :)

Hi,

I use 3/8, 7/16 and 1/2 a lot. Them three are in my carry in toolbox.
My full sets stay out in the truck until I need them.

I carry a 1/4 inch drive set in my bag. It has sockets from 1/4 inch to 9/16. I keep a 1/2 drive ratchet with extensions and deep well sockets on the truck.

Lately I have been hearing good things about the Gearwrench pass-through set.
I don't have one, but those that do say they like them.  I am considering one.
With these you don't need deep sockets. However long a bolt is, it just passes on through.
The 1/4" sockets are particularly short for tight quarters.
    yours Scott

Had been looking at the Gearwrench pass thru set. After your post I took another look and ended up ordering this set on Amazon.

GearWrench 8921 21 Piece 3/8-Inch Drive Pass Thru Ratchet Set

I like the fact that it a fine tooth ratchet that includes both standard & metric pass thru sockets along with interchangeable 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch drives that allow for the use of standard sockets.

This set should cover most anything I would use a 3/8 inch ratchet for.

Good price on the Gearwrench set.  Lowes and HF have their own brands too.  Not sure if I have seen them in Home Depot yet.

I have the craftsman version of that gearwrench pass through set and can only say good things about it.

have even used it on several occasions with a 3/8ths to 1/2 adapter and a 15/16th socket along with a  hammer to bust loose the tub nuts on a few duets... and once with a 1 1/2 in deep well on an LG toploader...   didn't even scuff the finish   O0

to be fair though I keep it in the truck, and the 1/4th in set I keep in my toolbag leaves off where the pass through set picks up...

Received my Gearwrench 3/8-Inch Drive Pass Thru Ratchet Set today, very nice!
Want to order the 1/4" drive pass thru ratchet set now, but I don't really need another 1/4 inch set, lol... :D

I've heard that the 3 most popular drive sizes of sockets are 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4", although you might want to keep as many sizes as possible handy in your tool bag to be safe.

Toolbag or toolbox?
