Insinkerator Garbage Disposal Stuck
« on: November 17, 2013, 04:26:20 PM »
I am trying to remove an old Insinkerator garbage disposal but I cannot get it out. It seems that the mounting tabs are stuck because I cannot remove it from the mounting ring. I've never had this issue before. Normally I just use a screw driver to remove them, but I can't get this one to budge no matter what I do. I've even tried a hammer and can't move it an inch. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Can you cut it off with something like a Dremel?
Sometimes if I'm afraid of cutting through something with a Dremel I will cut just half way through it. Then take a flat blade screwdriver and insert it in the slot I just cut with the Dremel and give the screwdriver a twist to bust it off the rest of the way, if that makes sense...
Hope you find our site helpful.

I use the allen wrench/unjamming tool in the flange. Twist the disposal while pulling on the wrench. I've had some tough ones but haven't had to grind one off yet. Don't worry about the flange, you get a new one with the disposal.

Thanks to you both. I had to put it away for the time being yesterday and plan to get back at it tomorrow. Luckily it's for my own apartment versus for a resident, so I have a bit more time to fool with it. One thing I also didn't try was to loosen the 3 bolts. I figure that might loosen it a bit, enabling me to move the tabs from the ring.

If that doesn't work, I'll start trying your suggestions. Never had one like this. I suppose it's time for a learning opportunity.  :tickedoff:

Tgoods, this may sound like a stupid question, but where in the flange do you place the allen wrench?

The flange lock, number 9 in the picture.  The wrench will fit in the loops and give you some more leverage.

When you go to mount the new disposal, use your left knee as your third hand. Support the disposal with your knee while peeking over the top of the sink.  From the top, you can position the disposal with both hands. Turn the flange lock backwards, you will feel it ride up the ramp and then pop into place.  When it pops in, turn it the right direction, counterclockwise when viewed from the top.  The disposal is now locked in, shouldn't take more than 15 seconds.

Hey tgood, thanks for the parts diagram. That helps a lot. I'm going to try it again this evening so hopefully all will go well.
