How to get the front panel off my dryer?
« on: November 05, 2013, 11:34:45 PM »
I have a GFDS355EL1MS GE front loading dryer. Today when I went to turn it on, I pressed the power button and heard a loud snap. Now the power button hangs loosely in the socket and I cannot turn on my dryer. I am attempting to remove the front plastic panel so I can try to fix the button myself, but I cannot remove it. There is a single screw on the back of the front panel and removing this screw does not free the front panel. There are plastic clips somewhere I cannot see but I cannot undo. I am afraid to force it in fear of the plastic shattering like the cheaply made power button.

The diagrams I can find online show three screws on the back of the panel. My dryer only has one single screw with none other visible from the front, sides, or underneath the control panel.

Any advice would be swell. This housewife is about ready to set every GE appliance on fire -- They're nothing but trouble.

Pull the big knob off. The screw is behind it. 'Fix it yourself' probably involves epoxy. You'll see why...

Thank you for the reply!

I found the screw and I got everything fixed. I immediately saw the little arm was broken and my daddy taught me well -- I always have some epoxy on hand. We're all fixed and working. Thank you so much!

Yeah $100 PLUS for a 'Start Button' is a bit ludicrous. I'v repaired several with Epoxy...

Holy crap, are you serious? I didn't actually look up the price of the panel after I fixed it.

I'm pretty sure my husband is going to see me as a saint. Good lord, 100 bucks is highway robbery.

This thread saved me $$$, and I am very appreciative.  I had the exact same problem with a GE front loading dryer model number GFDS355EL1MV.  After pulling out the big knob (the dial used to select the drying cycle) as indicated above and removing the screw just to the left of where the knob was, I was able to remove the control panel by lifting it up and out a bit.  The power button is located underneath the control panel board, so you have to remove that first (six screws) before you can reattach it....but it comes right out, so no big deal.  I used epoxy to reattach the arm on the power button to the panel and let it sit over night.  I used extra epoxy since the surface area to reattach is not that big and I didn't want it to break again.  Reattached everything and the power button is actually more sensitive now...it turns on and off with much less pressure.

Thank you....I'm hating this dryer so far....the dryer itself is great (options, drying time, etc.) but have already had two pieces break in just under three years....If I hadn't been able to fix this one myself, the total of the fixes would have been the same as a new dryer!
