Maytag washer won't cycle

Several weeks ago, the washer would stop after filling. I would jiggle the control knob and it would continue and complete. Now after filling with water, agitation will not start, but the timer continues to advance as it should but agitation, drain or rinse cycles do nothing....tub still full of water.

With tub still full, I try to use another cycle, and the only one that will work at all is the delicate cycle....any ideas, a timer?

Yes, replace the timer and everything should be back to normal. It is typical of this to fail in stages, such as the intermittent operation of one or 2 cycles. Eventually the contact in question fails completely and none of the programs will work.
