A true microwave gremlin. Unit works when I look at it..
« on: October 27, 2013, 09:02:18 PM »
I have a customer with a GE Microwave.  I went and looked at it, and it worked fine.  Boiled water and popped popcorn with no issue.  I looked inside, checked connections and said I couldn't find anything wrong with it.  They use it later that night, and say it shut off.  I come back next day and it works fine.  I check everything I can think of.  Could it be a thermal cut-off or the control board?

I don't want to just start changing parts, but it's hard to diagnose something when it works fine when you look at it.

Maybe a problem with the breaker?

no, because the customer resets it by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
    It is internal.

Sounds like a bad control board if all they do is unplug and plug back in.

that is what I am thinking too, but I would hate to tell them its the most expensive part of the unit and be wrong.  It's just strange that I never see it not work.

Leaky magnetron.  When you test it, leave the panel in place.

I suspected that, and on my second try, put up an electrostatic barrier (a hard drive cover) to block extra rf radiation from getting to the board.  I have way too many magnetrons, so if it was for sure that, I could give them a good price.  It's just so hard to test.

GE had problems with leaky magnetrons 7 or 8 years ago causing that problem so I agree with Tgoods

grr, I would rather it be the board, lol/  Magnetron means I have to take it apart,  take it down and put it back up.  I guess that can be done.  I'll shoot them a price.  I have a whole shelf of magnetrons and need to move them, so hopefully they like my price.

How the new guest boards works.
