Start Relay for Frigidaire FRS22ZGEW2
« on: October 23, 2013, 01:37:39 AM »
Hello, I have a friend that has a Frigidaire Gallery model FRS22ZGEW2 on which the compressor is not running and also gets very hot to the touch. I removed the relay and there is a very faint rattle. The rattle is not distinctive enough to make me certain that the relay is bad but, I did measure resistance across the compressor terminals and they seem to be okay. So, I took a gamble and ordered a start relay kit (OEM #5304426651). I have changed out a start relay previously and it was remarkably simple. So, I thought this one would be also. Alas, I'm not even sure I have the right kit. When I look at an image (http://www.appliancepartspros.com/frigidaire-relay-kit-5304426651-ap3210331.html) of the part on appliancepartspros.com it is entirely different from the images of the same part number (5304426651) shown on other sites (e.g http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Start-Relay/5304426651/918882). Anyway, I ordered the latter because it was the one shown predominantly across different sites. What's more, I think that I was shorted a piece. Instead of a white and black piece as shown on the right side of the image, I received two black pieces and not a white piece.

I'm trying to give as much detail as possible and hope I haven't lost anyone for being too wordy.

So, my question is three fold - Do I have the correct kit? If so, do I need the white piece? And, could some please tell me how to install this for this particular model (Frigidaire #FRS22ZGEW2)? I know it is a lot to ask. But, I sure would be grateful if somebody could bail me out here. Thank you.

Hi,

Fist off I would like to say that is by far the most expensive start relay I have ever seen!

Quote
Do I have the correct kit?

The factory part number for the start relay is # 5304426651
The factory part number for the overload (white piece) is # 5303321892

If so, do I need the white piece?

I always install a new start relay and overload together.

You will need to pull the refrigerator out from the wall so you can access the back of the refrigerator.

Unplug the refrigerator and remove the back panel so you can access the compressor.

On the side of the compressor is a plastic cover. Remove the plastic cover. It may have a metal wirer holding it in place that you will have to remove or the plastic cover may just snap off.

One you get the cover removed from the side of the compressor you simply have to unplug the old start relay and plug in the new one.

Thank you for your reply AJ.

I'm not sure if I am correctly interpreting your answer - Are you saying that the white piece in the image ( http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Start-Relay/5304426651/918882) is the overlay? If so, shouldn't it have been included in #5304426651. Were you just listing #5303321892 because i indicated it was missing from the kit that I received? And, is the small brown piece in the bottom-left of that image the actual relay? Sorry, to be so ignorant here.

No, the overload is not shown in that image.

I don't believe it is included in the kit you ordered so it will have to be ordered separately and is part # 5303321892

Here is a good image of the overload.

You are correct (big surprise). I just confirmed with the supplier that the overload is not included in the kit. I was confused because you referred to the overload as the "white piiece" and, earlier, I referred to my missing part as the "white piece". Thanks again for your help.

The very knowlegable person at the sales desk from which the part was ordered was kind enough to walk me through the replacement procedure. So, just in case somebody else as ignorant as me could use this information, below is the wiring procedure.

The kit, Frigidaire part #5304426651, is supposed to come with a new relay, a run capacitor, two different covers and a holding clip. Notwithstanding the price, it does not come with an overload. If the relay being replaced looks like that in the first two pictures below, then the wiring is as follows:

On the opposite side of the piece where the red and white wires enter, is a V or winglike tab that needs to be carefully pried away. I just used a flat blade screwdriver. This piece is the overload. Both the red wire and white wire have a female spade connector attached to terminals that will be revealed once the overload is detached. These wires will have to be removed. If you want to reuse the overload attach it to the top pin of the compressor so that the wing like tabs are facing down (like an inverted V). The red wire then is attached to the terminal on the overload. Included in the kit is a small brown relay that has 2 terminals on one side and one terminal on the other side. The run capacitor is the rectangular piece with the wires that came in the kit also. Plug the white wire that was previouly attached to the housing from which the overload was removed and one of the capacitor wires on the side that has 2 terminals on it. It doesn’t matter which one goes where. The other capacitor wire will go on the other side of the relay that only has 1 terminal on it. It doesn’t matter which capacitor wire goes on either side as there is no polarity. The third picture is the actual wiring diagram. The fourth picture is an image of the kit.
