Amana gas dryer NGD4655EW1
« on: January 15, 2017, 04:55:55 PM »
I just picked up an Amana gas dryer from a dealer who did not want to repair it although it is in like new condition. I was told it would not heat properly. It lights off the burner but only runs a short time before shutting off the gas. It appears that the one t-stat is at fault which I presume is a regulating t-stat. It has the following markings on the surface exposed to the heating duct. L180-30F   and a p/n on the opposite face 315240.  I have several others in my junk drawer that I am considering using but need to know how close I should try and match this rating ? Also noted that the gas valve coils are not individual coils but rather a combined unit. The electrical connectors are the same as almost every other gas type dryer I have ever worked on.  This is a new one to me and wondered if the old type coils will work on this unit. Also I dont think the coil assembly will come off without partially dismantling the gas valve  which is different than any I have ever worked on in the past. Can anyone assist me on this problem area and the interchangeability of the gas valve coils ? An illustration showing these items on a parts page would be handy also.

The hi temp t-stat was found to be not working, This is the one on the burner vertical duct up near the top but is in the lower position. A different part is being used as a temp substitute. With the drum out and the unit turned to timed dry it will fire up and run the burner for about 10 seconds before shutting off. after about 90 to 120  seconds it will again fire for about 10 seconds. I have checked every other item on this unit and cannot find any problem. I am very suspicious about the gas valve but it fires up properly but only for about 10 seconds. This gas valve is unusual in the configuration of the coils. Anyone else with any experience on this type of Amana gas dryer. It is a low priced unit but in like new condition. The parts illustrations I have found so far do not look like the typical coils and valve on a Maytag or Whirlpool ?

I try to make sure I test with the drum out for less than a minute --maybe two. Same time with the drum in place and turning.

Been down that road many times. Just saying I've gotten BAD Coils right out of the NEW Box many times - so just don't assume the coils are good because there NEW! I know I've seen those new coils as a COIL PACK but I'm curious if you just can't throw the old type coils on there just to test. You'll have to pull a mounting coil bracket off another dryer to test though and mount. I'd give it a shot just to see what happens - what's there to lose?

And as to using the old style coil kit i don't think it would work because there is only one screw that holds the whole one piece coil to the valve.

If the flame comes on and goes out fast....it's most likely bad coils or bad airflow

The problem appears to have been in one of the t-stats. I changed ti and it works OK now.
