Trouble with Maytag Performa washer
« on: October 15, 2013, 01:26:10 AM »
I got this second hand from my sister. I was told that it was fairly new. I've had it for a while in the house but just got my old washer out and hooked up. They said something about not doing big loads of laundry so I haven't been. Well I started a load of laundry before I left for work, about a half hour before I left. It was still agitating stuck at the 12ish minute mark after 9 hours! It smelled just a bit like burning electrical/plastic/rubber. I shut it off and waited until the next day. I turned it back on after advancing it to 9 minutes and watched it carefully. It ran fine. I finished that load and did an additional load since then. Tonight I tried to wash clothes and it stops when it gets to the spin cycle and won't pump the water out. It just hums or buzzes the hole time and does not jump to the next cycle. I'm a automotive mechanic but I've replaced a motor on a washer before. Its not outside my ability to work on it. So, I'm begging for ideas here. I believe the model number is W10140921 B. That is the only number I could find. Help please.

Seems like a bad timer, common for the contacts for the motor start circuit to burn.

I'm grateful for your advice. But just pretend you're talking to a moron and tell me where the part is on the washer, where I can get a new one, and roughly how much it will cost...I'm a moron.

The timer is behind the timer knob on the control panel. You can get it in this affiliates site appliancepartspros online
around $100. I usually take the timer apart to verify burnt contacts.

Okay, I'll make sure I do that. You don't think any damage was done to the motor by running it that long do you? I'm inclined to believe that's not the reason it won't spin as it won't drain either but I'm worried of course.

The number you provided is not the model number, need to find model number. Should be a label with model number and serial number somewhere, possibly under the lid.

Look  just over top of control panel, somewhere between the outside screws that hold panel in place.   I just replaced a timer where the top finger contact was almost broke in two.  Sometimes machine worked, mostly did not.
