Refrigerator turning on then instantly turns off
« on: October 01, 2013, 04:19:41 PM »
So I'm back not even a week later with ANOTHER broken fridge. My friend gave me the one from his basement on Saturday and this morning it has been turning on and off all day!

I hear a loud click, the compressor starts to hum, than instantly another loud click and it turns off. This happens about every minute or so. It is an old Admiral fridge that I have no model number on. The coils are on the back and it is a single door unit with freezer inside.

I don't know why fridges hate my house but any help in getting this thing back on its feet is greatly appreciated!

You can disregard. After looking again I realized that the compressor was overheating because there is no fan!

Compressors often fail, sometimes due to overheating. I would suspect shorted windings to ground.

Is it running now?  If not reply here and we can walk you through checking compressor windings.  There is a good possibility that the compressor is internally shorted.  However... if it was hot and you gave it a 30 minute cool down / equalization period it would start and run.  Only until the Klixon thermal overload on the start relay tripped from overheating again.  One this trips.. every 4 to 6 minutes or so it will try and restart the compressor as the Kilxon heats and cools repeating the start cycle.  Once the compressor is very hot or... has an internal head coolant pressure it will not restart until it cools and internal pressure stabilizes.  Usually 10 to 15 minutes.

Seems like burnt windings, 9volt ohmmeter check might not show a problem, but an amp probe check would show high current.
