Ice Cream Soft, Everything Else Frozen ???
« on: September 28, 2013, 08:30:23 PM »
Hi Guys,
I have a white consolidated Model# MFC15M3BW1 Chest freezer.I noticed the other day that the gallon tubs of my kids ice cream is soft. Everything else is frozen. I actually put 10 lbs of chicken in it after I noticed the soft ice cream and t is now frozen. (I pulled a piece out and hit it with a hammer because I was concerned)
I do have some frost forming on the inner front side of the freezer. I also pulled the cover off the side and the compressor is hot to the touch. I can hold my hand on it for about 8 seconds before I have to take it off.

Any suggestions on what to check? My family has been loading this thing up with meat that was on sale all summer. I really don't feel like smoking 20 racks of ribs and 30 lbs of pulled pork during the coming week. Thank you in advance for the advice. Oh yea, and I will be donating to the beer fund of the tech that helps me figure this out.

Ice cream is the first thing to defrost as it freeze at a lower freezing point .Unless one of the kids left door open it maybe seal system problem. That would mean it would not be worth fixing. As for compressor getting hot to touch that is normal. If door was left open it would freeze soild ice-cream within 24 hours.Basic freezer and may want to keep eye on it as it maybe on the way out.

Put a thermometer in it and that way you will know for sure.15 degrees is below freezing but 0 is where it should be.

I put a thermometer in it over night. I am getting 8 degrees. any ideas? I am looking at a slow  freon leak and it just got low enough now to cause an issue? Someone told me to put a compressor start relay in it. But, if it is getting cold would that mean that the compressor is starting? After I asked him that he said "fine, just put a run capacitor in it". I don't think this guy knows what he is talking about, but I also have no idea. Could a run capacitor possibly fix the issue?

I meant to type "Am I looking at a freon leak?" , Not I am looking at a freon leak.

I would say slow freon leak Is ice-cream still soft. Also when was the last time you defrosted freezer as its a manual defrost system.Do you have heaver frost on some of the freezer than other parts.Frost pattern should be even and know more than a half inch thick.

There is frost on the front inside panel, nothing on the sides. It is about 1/4" thick. My neighbor does HVAC and refrigerator repair for a living. Maybe I will have him stop by and check the freon pressure. The issue is that it is R-12. Can that even be found? I just replaced my ac and furnace because the ac had a leak and it cost me $150 to top off the freon only to have it leak out within a week

Opening the system up to put a line tap in and not having freon 12 maybe not the way to go.Maybe sorry.Where you had frost before and you know that freezer by now is were frost should be.If its not the same pattern obvious seal system problem.Time to buy new if not cooling that it did before.

Did you ever remove the panel inside the freezer and look at the frost pattern?
