error code F-05
« on: June 10, 2008, 06:36:56 PM »
My Kenmore washing machine will operate for about 5 minutes and then display the error code F-05.  On the error code list it indicates that it is a water temperature sensor error.  It also indicates that the heating element or the relay might be the problem. How do I test these parts and does anyone have any experience with this error code? Thank you.

check the heater for continuity. Then the relay will have a coil in it that should read continuity and it should also have a n/o and n/c terminal and a neutral terminal between the 2. Might be a bad breaker or a receptacle/hardwire problem.

The problem is in this case:
You have not provided the correct and complete model number. Not only can we not help you effectively, but neither can you look up parts without it. Without the model we are blindfolded. Most of these machines have very good tech sheets in the cabinet somewhere that explain the fault codes and what to check.

The model number is 110 4587 2700.  Thanks for replying Repair-man and JWWebster.  Could you tell me where the coil and relay is please. I'll look for the Tech sheets.  This machine is totally different from the other ones we've had.  The amount of wiring is intimidating.

Went to Sears database and typed what you gave me: 110.45872700

They say this is not a model number they recognize. Sorry to make this more difficult for you, but we can be very specific with our help if we can visualize the machine.

If this is a front-loader, it is likely the same as the Whirlpool Duet, which has manuals scattered everywhere. If it is a top-loader, like the Cabrio model that Whirlpool makes, there's info on those too. Just need the pictures given when we cross-reference the model number in order to know.

Oops  It's dark in the laundry room and the correct number is 110 45872400.    It is a front loader and I think it is similar to the Whirlpool Duet.  Sorry for wasting your time with the wrong model number Repair-man and JWWebster.

Remove the 3 Torx screws on the bottom panel and take the panel off. There should be a large envelope taped to the side of the cabinet with your tech sheet.  If it is missing, I'll provide a good source of reference in this .pdf file.

Repairman knows more about these front loaders than me. I have never laid hands on one. I have seen one, I am waiting on my neighbor who has a bunch of lazy kids to call me about her new fangled front loader. I have been reading up on them and most of them get too much soap in them or the pump gets a coin in it or water gets n the floor of it and a switch shuts it down thinking it is leaking or flooding.

Thanks to both of you I found the problem.  When I removed the front cover there was a pair of wires with a black connector on it and it was just hanging there. I connected it to to a connector on the side of the drum in the middle at the bottom.  I just ran a load and it works fine.  I'm going to donate because I like the way you guys operate.  I found other sites and they wanted money up front.  I'll keep your site for future reference.  Thanks again.  My wife will be happy and I'll be able to go fishing now.
