Burning smell from refrigerator. Need help!
« on: September 22, 2013, 03:44:27 PM »
I woke up to an awful burning smell throughout my house. I traced it to my Kenmore fridge from 2001.  The freezer and fridge were still working. I heard a crackle from the back of the fridge so I unplugged it. I took off the back panel and don't see any wiring or components that look burnt. I left it unplugged for an hour. I began to think maybe it was an electrical problem coming from my outlet and not the fridge. I plugged the fridge into a different outlet and nothing happened. It took 10-15 minutes for anything at all to start up but now I hear some normal humming.

Please help! I can't afford a repairman let alone a replacement. I can attach pictures, if needed. Thanks in advance!

Check the relay on the compressor ( remove and smell ),especially if it is an Embraco compressor.

Thanks, it is an Embraco. Could you please point out where the relay is on it? I've attached a picture. Is it a fairly easy removal process?

Ok, I watched a YouTube video about replacing the relay. I think I can remove it by myself. If it smells burnt, then you think it's the culprit? I assume the refrigerator wouldn't be working if the compressor went out therefore it rules out the compressor and just leaves the relay, correct?

UPDATE: it's been a couple of hours since I plugged the refrigerator back in to a different outlet. I think cleaning all the dust out may have helped but I still want to check the relay. I don't smell any burning smell. However, I notice the fan to the right of the compressor has stopped spinning. Is this normal or is it supposed to spin 24/7?

If the compressors running the fan should be turning .. if the compressor stops the fan should stop...
Check the Basics first!!! Read the Manual !!!Buy the tech a Beer!!!

Well the fan started up again so I'm learning that the compressor and fan are supposed to shut off periodically? Still no burning smell. Could it really just been a matter of way too much dust? Yhat would be awesome!
