JT965 microwave/oven wall combo - bottom element will not heat
« on: September 13, 2013, 11:10:19 PM »
Hi,

the oven has three modes: broil, bake and convection. When in broil mode, the top element in the oven will heat up. When in bake mode, the top element will heat up, but not the bottom. When in convection mode, both elements will heat up (top and bottom). Since most of my baking is without the convection oven, and my cakes and things started under-baking, I concluded the bake mode is not working correctly.
I tested and the power is in the lower element, and it also heats up under convection. I concluded that it is the bake relay on the control board that probably is bad (since otherwise the temp seems to be maintained under convection and the oven does produce heat). I tried to reset the house fuses as well (turned them off for 30 sec and then turned back on).

Your thoughts on the above assumption? Can I replace only the relay or do I have to replace the complete board?

My model number is JT965SF1SS - I do not know what the oven control board part number is.

Thank you!

Not sure about your model but most ovens. need to find the service manual.

Will pre-heat by alter bake and broil until heated

once pre-heat is over.
then broil only top
then bake only bottom
then fan and fan heater alters between bake and broil

If your bake relay(K1) on the board is bad then it would Not heat (open) or would heat all time (closed)

Have you checked the temperature with a oven thermometer?

I never previously measured the performance of the oven (temperature wise) but I never had any problems with my baking, like I do now.

I have the Taylor Oven Thermometer now and I put it in the oven middle vertically and horizontally. I put the oven on Bake @ 350F. 10 min after the oven had met the temperature (supposedly) the temperature was at 225F. Wow. I knew it could be off, but by that much??
So, I put it on Convection @350 and the oven heats up properly. 5 min after it meet the temperature, it is still at 350F and 15 min later it does not have spikes more than 10-20F. I then change to Bake and it keeps the temperature at 350F 20 min later.
I know I can change the calibration of the oven by 35F, but that would not help me - the food would burn when I would use convection.
I think that the bake element is working - it got hot when the oven was pre-heating.

I don't think the temperature probe is bad, or is it?

I never got any error codes in the system either. I have the service manual, as well, but it does not state how the heating process works (although it does give the relays and connections info: http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/smitty1486/2011-10-05_004525_jt950s0a3ss.pdf)

Thanks again!

So looks like the problem is with preheat

preheat is a timed cycle has nothing to do with temperature .

Try this with a cold oven turn it on to 350f bake
with thermometer in oven let the oven heat for 1 hr then check temp ever 10 minutes after.

let us know.

Bake and Time Bake
Bake and Broil units operate sequentially during
Preheat. Broil unit is on approximately 25% of the
time during the balance of the Bake operation, with
approximately 1 minute of dead time between
units.
