Maytag Washer A612 noticing grease marks on clothes
« on: September 10, 2013, 03:21:31 PM »
My wife is noticing grease marks on laundry, after washing. That means my honey-do list just got longer again.
Any clues. ???

Sounds like you MAY have a tub leak.  I've seen tubs seals go out and allow water to enter the transmission.  Since oil is less dense than water, oil begins gets pushed to the top, through the failed seal and the end result is grease/oil stains on clothing.

Save it as that machine will still outlast a new one.

I say you can get oil on the clothes in this washer. Water in = oil out. Right up the agitator shaft into the tub. Fixable but hard on the upper bearing and shaft. Used to fix these all the time. Almost always changed the upper shaft because the spot where the seal rides would be so damaged that the new seal wouldn't work. Plus water coming up through the bearing is hard on that. The shaft is still available, but the upper case with the bearing is not.

Any washer with the top of the transmission in the tub can leak oil into it if the seal fails. One problem you didn't have to worry about with the direct drive. To access the transmission, remove the front, tip the top back, remove the agitator, tub cover, inner tub,and outer tub. Then tip the machine  back and from underneath remove the belt and transmission pulley. Then from inside lift the transmission out.

Wow again. I guess I'll find a diagram before attempting all that.
Thank you for the quick response

Repair always starts with the first step.
I removed agitator screw, great.
Agitator decided to agitate me by refusing to lift off.
I am a one-armed DIYer.
Is there a trick to lifting out agitator.
Not giving up. :-\ :-\

What parts do I need to order or do I wait to disassemble.
Also if grease has been leaking, do I need to add some.

When the transmissions were built they were only half full of oil. Now you have a transmission full of water and oil. You will have to remove the top of the transmission and clean out that mess and fill the bottom half with gear oil.

I have only had to do this once..but this may help.
    • Fill the washer with hot water to cover about 4" bottom of the agitator.
    • 60 inches long nylon rope
    • fold the rope in half making a loop.
    • run opens end thou the loop
    • loop the laso around agitator low as you can.
    • Get a 6 ft long 2x4
    • Put one end of 2x4 on top of agitator
    • with the 2x4 extending off the front of the washer.
    • put a  towel on the top front of the washer.
    • tie the rope around the 2X4
    • press down on the extended 2x4 too pull up on the rope and remove agitator
