Maytag MRG5751 Gas Range Oven not working
« on: September 02, 2013, 07:26:13 PM »
OK, here's my problem.  Moved and had to store my stove in the garage for 7 weeks.  When we disconnected it, everything worked perfectly.  Plugged it in today, and the burners work, the broiler works, but the oven doesn't.  Removed the bottom panel in the over so I could see the burner assembly.  Electric ignitor gets hot and glows, but no flame.  Pulled unit out and vaccumed the venturi tube in case a crawler decided it was a wonderful place to live, and still nothing.  I don't smell gas coming from the area so I'm fairly confident there's not a clog in the tube or burner.

Any thoughts on where to go from here and maybe some procedures on how to go about it?  I am by no means an appliance repairman, but I have fixed multiple issues with my gas dryer and washer with no problems, so I'm not completely inexperienced, just never had to do work like this on my stove.

Thanks.

Look for a little valve on the regulator if the valve is off it could generate a symptom like you have if not then ignitor probably coincidence that is worked before you moved.  Always look for bad connections too.

Check the amp draw of the ignitor.  If it's not pulling at least 3.2 amps, it's bad.

I tried holding a lighter alongside the burner to see if any gas was flowing and the ignitor wasn't lighting it, but nothing.

Where would I find the valve on the regulator and how would I know if it is open or not?

Checked all connections right off the bat, and everything was tight and secure.

The ignitor can still glow but Not draw 3.2 amps and no gas will be allow out of the valve. you will need a clamp on amp meter to test... also sometimes there will be a small white spot on the ignitor but not always,  BTW using a lighter to check for gas is Not always the best way to do that!
Check the Basics first!!! Read the Manual !!!Buy the tech a Beer!!!

So, I went to replace the ignitor and the new one had the wrong plug and no adapter.  So, I decided to flip the ignitor for the oven and the broiler as they are the same part.  Now, the broiler won't light (it glows but not enough so it really was a bad ignitor and will be replaced).  However, the oven still won't light.  Now it doesn't even glow.  Any thoughts?  I'm quickly approaching the phone book stage of frustration.  Any further help would be great.

Thanks.

Maybe the broil ignitor was damaged during the swap. Did you get any ceramic wire nuts with your new ignitor? Snip the wires, strip 1/4 inch of the insulation and wire nut them together.

This is the point where electrical meters save the day. You should check the bad ignitor for continuity and the working one for amperage draw as Krazytech suggested. Otherwise just guessing and parts swapping is expensive and will drive you crazy.
