LG washer trips GFCI when plugged in...
« on: August 26, 2013, 04:36:36 PM »
Replaced GFCI 20 amp but still the same condition.  Works fine with 2 prong adapter or an extension cord plugged into a non-GFCI outlet.  People tell me that this is a dangerous situation and the fault is in the washer.  Please help me diagnose and rectify this problem.

<<<Replaced GFCI 20 amp but still the same condition.>>>

**********

As mentioned---GFCI not required for laundry washers---usually "trips" when the internal washer water heater is activated (depending on cycle selected).

<<<Works fine with 2 prong adapter or an extension cord plugged into a non-GFCI outlet.>>>

In addition to being not "grounded" (for safety)---the electronic components (Main & Display Boards) also need a proper/good earth/ground to reliably function.

Maybe I forgot to mention that the washer had been working on the GFCI outlet for about 8 years then suddenly...tripped GFCI when it is plugged in.

If the washing machine is tripping the GFCI, I would say that it has the potential to electrocute someone when they touch the washing machine, in my experience if it trips the GFCI it has a major fault and would not pass the Australian standards for being electrically safe, This test is has to be done by law to every appliance on completion of the repairs and a safety test tag to be put on the lead.
The GFCI should protect the whole house.

its better to be safe than sorry

Please click on the link to read a two page pdf form for regulations here in Victoria Australia

This is just one part I have copied from the pdf form
"In Victoria, it is mandatory for safety switches to be installed
on both the power and lighting circuits in new properties
and older properties when extensive renovations are
carried out."

safety switches = gfci
