My Maytag washer sounds like an airplane!!!

My washer has suddenly started making noise (its a loud chattering/clicking...kinda like the big wheel on the Price Is Right but much, much louder). It happens any time the motor is turning...
agitating, spinning, etc. Sometimes it will get quieter, even non-existant but, it will come back. There have been times it got so bad
that it caused the cycle to be disrupted (I heard it clicking still in the
agitation cycle but the agitator was not moving. When this happened, if I stop it and try to restart, I get nothing...dead. If I take the front off and re-position the motor, I can get it clicking again.
I took the belt off and all the pulleys turn freely in both directions. The pump pulley however sounds as though it is scraping against something slightly.
Would the pump assembly/pulley be the most likely cause???
Have you heard of a similar case?

Most likely the water pump needs to be replaced. You could remove the pump and see if there is something caught inside, but I would guess it's going to have to be replaced.

I see a lot of these water pumps fail like that.

Thanks for the input apptech.

I did replace the pump and the belt too while I was at it.
There was nothing inside the pump but, the shaft at the bottom
of the pump appeared to have a loose metal sleeve around it with
some bent edges.

The new pump did the trick. No more airplane sound.
I am now back to a quiet working washer and clean clothes!!!
