Newer Whirlpool Dryer won't stop running - FIX
« on: October 24, 2015, 07:55:17 AM »
Was working on a Newer Whirlpool Electric Dryer this week - Model #WED4850XQ0 customer complained that the Dryer would not shut off after opening the door. I first checked door switch - that checked out OK - I also checked the Push to Start Switch and that also checked out. I also checked the timer and looked for a burn't or welded contact in the timer settings - that also checked out. All thermostats and thermal fuses were checked - I decided to attack the motor and took the motor out and opened up the Start Switch on the Dryer Motor and look what I found! The Centrifugal Switch Rocker Arm Pin was sheared off and Broke inside the Switch on the Motor (picture attached). The bad is you can't buy the switch itself Part #337991 - I had another switch from a Bad Motor that I used to replace and get the motor back up and running with no Issue - but if your not that lucky it looks like your going have to replace the Motor one with a New one. Fortunately the price of this motor has come down drastically and is pretty popular. Last I checked I could get it for $49.00 or less on the net. But if you were taught to be a Engineer Technician first - (like my father taught me) by trade not by school, I decided to fix the switch by drilling a hole in the bottom of the switch and mounting a small bolt and nut to act as the POST for the rocker switch. I was taught at a very early age by my 85 year old father (still alive) FIND WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM AND FIX IT OR PREVENT IT by engineering it so it doesn't break again - DON'T JUST SWAP OUT PARTS - THAT DISTINGUISHES YOU FROM OTHERS!!!

REINSTALLED THE MOTOR AND NOW THE DRYER -  FIXED !!!  Photo's to follow....

Trouble with that in this day & age is lawyers & sue happy atmosphere.  Plus a technicians time worth.   For a diy'er that is great but for a professional technician his time is money.

yes, I'm with ya but as Patricio pointed out the liability.
There are a lot of times I could fix an issue better than ordering the same part but, not willing to put my neck on the chopping block if it caused a fire, flood or worse.... death.
