Looking to buy a 1/4 inch socket set.
« on: November 17, 2015, 04:54:40 PM »
Some things I'm looking for in a 1/4 inch ratchet set.

1. 6 point
2. SAE & Metric
3. Regular & Deep
4. Nice storage case.

I kind of have it narrowed down between these two.

TEKTON 13001 1/4-Inch Drive Socket Set, Inch/Metric, 51-Piece

GearWrench 80300 51 Piece 1/4-Inch Drive 6 Point Socket Set

I'm more of a fan of GearWrench then Tekton.
I think the GearWrench set would have a nicer ratchet.

What do you guys think?

Any other sets I should take a look at?

I have the gear wrench 80300 set, love it. Would never buy anything else. You won't be sorry

Maybe you can tell me then how long the ratchet is.

I see there is a Gearwrench 80300 & 80300P

Seems the 80300 is 84 tooth ratchet and the 80300P is a 120 Position, 3 ratcheting arc ratchet with teardrop low profile head.

But I can't seem to find the length of either one, even on http://www.gearwrench.com

The Tekon set has a 5 inch ratchet and some of the reviews said they wish it was a bit longer, even 1/2" long.
Believe I read one Amazon review on the 80300 that said the ratchet was really really short, like 3 inches!

So one thing I'm wondering about the 80300 is the length of the ratchet.

Thanks,

The ratchet I have with my set 80300, is app. 5 inches. It seems to be perfect length for me. I'm not sure about that 3 inch set, someone mentioned on amazon, unless they changed something, mine is a nice size.

I got myself one of these a couple months ago, and quite literally haven't needed to touch my socket set since then. There is the very rare instance where I think I'll still need it for the deep sockets, but this tool + 1/4 nut driver + a hand drill take care of 90% of what I need.

 90' chuck

That being said, my 1/4 socket set is junk - I got the cheapy Stanley set from Walmart. I do everything I can to avoid using it.

I got one too and was greatly disappointed that the gears seemed to be plastic. Stripped on the second or third use, HomeDepot, luckily, swapped it for me.

I picked up a kobalt go through set at Lowes on sale for 19.99 which I have been happy with. Come with extension. Been good for 99% of my work when I require sockets.

This what I carry in my bag.  I have a 1/4 hand rachet and ext to when needed, but this works for most anything I need day to day and it takes up little room in my bag.  My backup set with bigger sockets and longer ext is just a small 3/8 kobalt set I got on sale at Lowes.
