WHIRLPOOL LXR9245EQ1 - GRINDING NOISE
« on: July 17, 2013, 05:44:40 PM »
I replaced a broken coupler.  Put the washer all back together and now it spins but with every spin it makes a very loud grinding sound and the bucket seems really loose. The grinding sound is not continuous only as it spins.  Hard to explain.

Please help or hunt me down and shoot me.  UGH!!!

Check the drive block under the agitator in case the nut is loose or the "ears" are worn off .

Where is that located at and how do you get to it?  I'm sorry!  I'm female and this is all new to me.  I was quite proud of myself for replacing the coupler but now this.  Trying to save my mom some money.

Thanks so much!

Cap on top of the agitator pops off (may need blade of screwdriver to pry it off) under you will see a 7/16 nut . (May have a plastic cap covering it) Remove it and the agitator will lift off. You will see a shaft sticking up,below that a nut (round) I spin the tub with my hand and see if it rotates separate from the nut. It should not.

Did you drive the coupler too far onto the tranny or motor? I have done it. Caused the coupler to bind up

I'm almost certain it does have something to do with the agitator itself.  I took the top cap off, spun it again and the loud noise seems to be coming from down in the agitator.  It almost sounds like real hard plastic gears grinding.  Ugh.  I don't understand how both the coupler and agitator part could both go bad at the same time though.  I'm going to take the agitator apart although I don't even know what I'm looking for.   :'(

Okay guys... I took the agitator itself off and when I do the spin cycle, works perfect. No noise!  So I set the agitator back down on the shaft tried it again and the noise is back.  It kind of sounds like the hard plastic is hitting up against something on the shaft but I don't know what it would be.  Any suggestions as to what to look for that may be broke??  I don't know what these parts are supposed to look like!

Faulty gearcase. More specifically, the agitate cam inside the gearcase is worn and allowing the agitate gear to partially engage the agitator shaft during spin. Replace gearcase or tear it down and replace the cam.
