Ice maker slow production after power outage
« on: July 13, 2013, 02:45:27 PM »
So, here's one for y'all. I have a Kenmore Model 106.8580210. It has the simple sort of ice maker, just a collection tray (no through-the-door stuff).

I came home to find my refrigerator had been off for a couple days and had warmed up completely.

Investigation determined my AC unit, which is on the same circuit (don't ask), tripped the breaker and caused the outage.

After it cooling down, I noticed it wasn't making ice. So, after reading a few threads, I poured some water into the ice maker to verify that IM itself was working. Sure enough, some hours later I had a batch of perfect ice cubes.

At this point I concluded the feed line may be frozen, so I prepared to buy a turkey baster to try to melt it with hot water. Before I did so, however, I noticed the thing had actually made a second batch of ice!

"Problem solved", I thought.

Not so. Since then, it's been several days, and production has totaled maybe 4 or 5 batches. Usually the whole tray would be full by now.

I thought maybe the feed line was partially frozen, but this would seem (I would think) to lead to smaller ice cubes, rather than slower production.

What do y'all think I should do?

What is the temperature of the freezer? When it makes cubes are they the proper size?

Things do seem a bit warm. The freezer's at about 25, and the fridge is about 45.

Then again, this isn't the newest fridge and I never bothered to measure it before (it's not my fridge), so I really have no idea how cold it's supposed to get. I know new fridges definitely get quite a bit colder.

The ice cubes are normal size.

Ice makers won't work above 15 degrees. You will get best ice production around zero.

That true even for a model this old? How has it then produced any ice?

Also, sort of failure, caused by the circuit breaker being tripped, would lead to warmer conditions rather than outright failure?

If it's a simple matter of cleaning the condenser, or some sort of leak, why would it surface right now?

We know what the symptoms are, so, let's concentrate on the problem.  Bailey is correct and if your freezer is 25 F, the icemaker will make very little or no ice.  It doesn't matter if it's an old fridge or a new fridge, the temperature in the freezer should be about 0F. Check that the evaporator fan in the freezer, the condensor fan in the back and the compressor are running.  Check that the condensor coils under the fridge are clear.  If that checks out, remove the back panel of the freezer and check the evaporator coils for frost buildup. Report back with what you find.
