Whirlpool Dryer WED5810SW0 - Won't Start
« on: July 03, 2013, 01:25:47 PM »
After searching / reading some of the other topics here, I think I found the basic cause of my dryer issue - the Thermal Fuse (3392519).   I checked it with my meter - measured as an 'open', and when I by-passed the fuse, the dryer started fine.

My question is - what is the likely cause for this to fail?   I assume the build-up of lint which would prevent proper air-flow and heat build-up, correct?   Is there anything else that I should be concerned with?   I'm cleaning it up now, including the rigid vent piping....which had more lint than I expected.    If I didn't know better, it looks as though we run the dryer without the lint filter in place.

Thanks for your thoughts - this site has saved me on a number of occasions!    O0

The most likely cause is a clogged filter chute. You should remove the filter chute and clean it out. The temp must exceed 350f for that fuse to melt so that would mean NO AIR is getting past the point where it is mounted.

Thanks JW.   I cleaned everything.  I pulled quite a bit of lint from opening of the dryer / into the elbow on the exterior of the dryer, so that may have been the biggest blockage.    I purposely replaced the semi-rigid vent pipe with the solid/rigid pipe to minimize this happening, but I guess I still need to clean this out every year.    It just surprises me how much lint can get past the filter - which we clean between every load.
Thanks again....off to the parts store.....

Some may disagree but, by far, the most common cause is the thermal fuse wears out.  Second most common cause is a shorted element.  In rare cases, a stuck operating thermostat will cause it to blow.  A clogged vent doesn't usually affect the thermal fuse but will blow the thermal cutoff on the heater can.

I also agree with T goods. They just blow.and everything is clean.good for a nice service call too. Easy money. Longs as you got easy access to back panel. But you always have to check out lint filter chute too and vent just in case.
