I used to used adwords. It works well if you know what your doing. I get enough referals and new customers from my website now that i dont need to advertise. In the beginningi spent over $1000 a month on adwords. Seems like a lot, but i had no customers and that brought me in over $5000 a month.

Adwords brought the most consistent return. Set your budget low until you have a campaign that works for you, then ramp it up.

Use negative keywords too. "Washer repair" will also show your ads when someone searches for "pressure washer repair" study up on adwords before you sink money into it. Read, read, read. Its way too complex to get into detail here.

Adwords is too expensive for me. I will spend around $50 per month in the yellow pages and I treat my customers well so I
have a favorable review on Ange's list and in Google. Seems like most of my repairs come from online searches.

It takes a little time out of your day,   but I joined alot of groups in the beginning.   Networking groups,   business groups,   went to marketing classes.     There are so many ways to promote your business for free,  you just have to work it and then reap the results.    I spend 0 dollars right now and have more business than I can handle.

Every area is different ----  rural,  city,  part of country,  etc.     You just have to find what works for your area.     One thing is important....... Always be thinking of promoting yourself.    When I'm in line at supermarket,   people see my shirt and I always try to strike up conversation.    Today,  for instance,  I was in line at end of day in market,   and I told cashier I know i had to fix several refrigerators in the morning.     Lady behind me asked for card,   then the guy behind her asked for one.    I talked to both of them for a few minutes,  and on friday Im going to lady's house to check her dryer,   not drying well.   I constantly try to push my business.     There are subtle ways to do it to get them to ask for your card.   And (not bragging but...) I am a friendly guy that loves to bullshit.   And people like that.     A good personality really helps.

And remember,  you build a house block by block.   That is how you have to grow business.    Customer by Customer.     And if they like you,   they will be your advertising.   They will promote you to all of their friends.   That is the best way to grow a business.      When they read an ad in anything (internet, phone book,  newspaper),    they don't know who the hell you are.   You could be some creep.  That is why you have to nurture personal relationships.

Sign up with Yelp.com or AngiesList.com.  That's how about 98% of my COD business comes from.  I am swamped right now.  Right now, I just have a listing under them because my customer's put me there.  I didn't sign up at all so in essence I'm getting free advertising on a major scale.  If you're work is good, the customer's will leave 5 star comments about you and it will snowball from there.

Wild,  I get a ton of Angies list calls,  and your right.   Not once cent in cost.   Do they call you to advertise?   I have gotten super service awards the last 6 years,   and they call to try to get me to advertise in their magazine every month.      I tell them I don't need any more work,  I have enough.
