well, after reading about possible causes such as bad shock absorbers or the outer drum being bad, I decided to take the top & front covers off to take a look. What I found was that the rear concrete counterweight had broken off & was laying on the bottom! I am going to try to re-attach it to the top of the drum & hope that fixes it! it is only 2 years & 3 months old & out of warranty so I was pretty ticked at the thought of having to buy a new one already or spend $400 for repairs!
Has this happened to anyone else? Model WFW9250WW00

I've never seen that.  I think you have a factory defect. Either the bolts were tightened down too tight or were left too loose. Call Whirlpool to see if they'll give you a concession.  They've providing tubs for bad bearings, maybe they will for this, too.

I've seen that but customer told me it had been overly loud for a number of months .I think if they were a bit more proactive the bolts could have been tightened .Bottomline was w/p told them too bad so sad .

Had a GE frontload where the concrete weight broke off & took a good size chunk off wash tub with it.   I speculate a piece of clothing got between tub & Drum, wadded up, & got pinched where weight was, busting the tub.

Thank you everyone for the replies! Whirlpool has not been very sympathetic since I was 2-3 months out of warranty, but now that I know the problem, perhaps I will try to contact them again!

I find the best way to deal with w/p is to be polite yet firm .If the first csr doesn't appear to give a damn ask to speak to his/her supervisor .Good luck !

Btw on your 1st post you said it was 2 years 3months old .Thats why I figured you had no chance for a concession .On your 2nd post you said only 2-3 months out of warranty .I would think your chances are good then.

The warranty was for 2 years. Purchased it Jan 10, 2011, banging noise started in April- May 2013. it may be worth the fight with Whirlpool to get the outer drum replaced!

An authorized service company can get an authorization as long as they are claiming the front and rear outer basket and the inner wash basket.
