GE dryer stopss after a few minutes
« on: October 14, 2016, 08:30:32 PM »
Customer has a GE dryer. The basic one, GTDX180ED2WW. sometimes it will stop after about 2 or 3 minutes.  This seems to be on any cycle.  It will not start right back up, but after a minute or two it will.

After it starts back up, it will continue through the rest of the cycle no problem.

I have not been able to witness it.  It works fine for me when I am there.

I thought it might be the timer, and the the timer shaft was worn from a broken knob so I replaced the timer and the knob.  It tested fine.  No problem for me while I was there.  Started and ran for 5 or more minutes on each cycle.

Customer texted me tonite and says it stopped again after 2 minutes in the timed cycle and would not start right up.

The motor is super clean and did not seem to be getting hot when I checked it the first visit.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like the cat?  The cat gets near the exit duct and blocks it.  Once the warm air stops the cat leaves and after the thermals reset, the dryer can re-start.

Does it happen at some particular time of day?

You just suggested nite time which would make sense.  Your probably there during the day when it's warm?

This has happened during the daytime and the night time. She's got a good solid vent hose on there so I don't think anything is blocking it. Excellent air flow. I check that with my air flow meter.

And if you meant an outside cat, I don't think so. It vents out the roof. I'm also in South Texas. Hot at night and hot during the day.

Sounds like a bad outlet or loose wires on terminal block. Look for scorching on one of the terminals of the plug. Bring a plug with you. The receiving "knuckles" can get bent and not make good contact all the time. When you move it around for service it can make better connection.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. Can't recall if I looked at that while I was there or not. But I do move the dryer around a little bit when I'm there.
I will certainly double check all the electrical connections when I go back. Won't be till Wednesday.
