We have a GE Profile washer that is a little over 2 years old.  It is making a grinding sound during the wash cycle that sounds like this:

Does this sound like the motor going out?

Thanks,
Hank.

Sounds like the mode shifter isn't fully engaged and the pulley is rubbing on the cam teeth. Take a close look just above the large drive pulley to see if this is what is happening. In agitate mode, the mode shifter coil is energized pulling the cam upwards disengaging the teeth from the pulley. In spin mode, the cam teeth are fully engaged with the pulley to drive the basket. Could also be that the pulley nut is loose causing the pulley to be off-center.

The mode shifter cam is completely separated from the drive pully when agitating.  The noise is still there.  Not as loud during the gentile cycles though.

Have you checked to see if the main drive pulley is rubbing on the bottom of the washer?

With the front cover off, I watched during the spin cycle and there wasnt anything touching the bottom of the machine.

Check for objects between tubs not allowing the tub to engage is what I would try. Hydrowave manual (from fearless leaders awesome stash of manuals on Gdrive babe) O0

I don't see how it could be something between the tubs as the noise is occuring during agitation mode when the tub is locked. Does it make the noise in spin mode as well?

No, not making the noise during spin mode.  Also, there is much less noise being created during agitation when I have it in the Easy Care modes vs. the cotton modes.

It may be the agitator drive block is worn and slipping. Remove the agitator and check the drive block which just fits over the agitator shaft and couples to the agitator. To remove the agitator, rotate the fabric softener dispenser CCW and pull out. Remove the 7/16" bolt and pull the agitator. Remove/check drive block.
