GE WBVH6240FWW front loader washing machine smoking
« on: May 16, 2013, 11:22:25 AM »
Okay my GE front loader has been sending out smoke signals! It was not every load but a few were done after it had started.  I removed the front as I replaced the gasket about a year ago.  the drum housing is getting rubbed on there is some glazed melt plastic on the front of the housing minor but is this a drum balance issue or are the drum bearings shot.  It spins pretty freely but in certain spots I can feel it rubbing or something.  Need to get this fixed asap do I call a serviceman to repair or attempt this myself depending on what it is. Pretty handy any help is appreciated. thanks Gene

make sure the front of the unit is higher than the back. Then make sure your belt is not coming apart, also check the top springs and bottom struts.

Thanks for the response, springs and struts all seek okay belt still looks new. I will reassemble and make sure the front is higher than the back and try a load see what it does.

The washer is running but there is a lot of vibration on the spins. The drum looks like it is spinning off center, and I can hear it rubbing against the drum housing. Also the 4 bumpers in the back will not stay in they keep getting pushed back and stick out farther from the back. Any other ideas? looks like it's time to call the repair guy.

Repair guy came and the rear supports and bushing is shot, GE sells parts at the component level and the work will cost me 540 bucks time for a new washer and this one was only 6 years old!  The drum assembly is over 400.00 bucks! Any who will never buy another GE appliance I am going back to Whirlpool and top loader at that! Thanks for your assistance.  Gene

If you call GE, they'll sell you the parts directly for a reduced price.  I think they sell them for about half the retail cost. 1-800-GE-CARES.

Remember when a clothes washer was $150 and lasted 20 years?  I bought a Whirlpool set when I graduated college.  That's when I knew I'd reached adulthood.  No more laundromat.  Raised 2 kids, washing a load or two a day.  20 years before it finally gave out.  Spent 4 or 5 times that on this piece of crap, and it's lasted 5 years.
