Was just listening to a program on public radio about how people are keeping their cars longer now days because they are built so well.

So why are automotive manufacture building cars to last longer and appliance manufactures seem to be doing exactly the opposite?

Will the auto manufactures end up seeing the mistake they have made as they look at the decrease in new auto sale in years to come and stop making them so well?

Maybe appliance manufactures will take a look at the auto industry and see the positive effects there are to making a quality product that is built to last?

I think it's too late. Plus they have to be energy efficient.

Kinda reminds me of back when they first started making smaller more efficient cars. Most of them were junk. 10 years later they were a little better.  I bet we start to see some more reliable yet efficient appliances in a few years.

The best option for us would be if they would make ones that only break a little bit.  ::)

Easy quick fixes that don't cost too much and give us lots of business!

What we need is more competition to build replacement parts. Like generic fuses, actuators and pumps. Like the aftermarket parts manufacturers do for cars.  Why pay $80 for an engine coolant temperature sensor from GM when you can get an aftermarket one for $15 that is identical (and better quality).

Why don't more manufactures produce aftermarket parts?

Is there something legally stopping them?

I know what you mean about auto parts. Dealer wanted $65 for water pump for sons car. Something like $300 labor on top of it.
I went to NAPA and purchased a new water pump for $30.00 and had a buddy of mine install it for next to nothing.

On the flip side, how about part manufactures producing higher quality parts that are made to last a life time?
