I was a Maytag Red Carpet for 26 years. 1 pump was changed because of a computer chip wedged in the pump and stripped it, another was a nail. Never found the cause of the 3rd one. And it wasn't hard to make a living then as it is now because we worked on everything else. Repaired 95% of the machines then ,repair 55% now.

Oldstoveguy ,I was also a red carpet service for many years ...remember the rules you needed to follow ...red drop mats ,specs on how we needed to keep our work area after completing call..some rules were for show but they looked after their techs. To me there was alot more respect back then and like you most appliances were repaired ,not condemed. I was proud to represent a top notch maytag company . Oh times have changed !

I was very proud to do their service, and yes they really backed you up "no matter what" I still use my battered pad for under my call book as it won't let it scratch anything I lay it on. My Mom as a joke bought me stock in Maytag, kept it for years until fees cost more than my dividends paid. Sold all but 1 share, got it on paper. Whirlpool keeps bugging me to trade it for a share of Whirlpool, I will never get rid of it. #1 to remember my Mom and #2 I Loved Maytag. My refrigerator is 20 years old, Maytag. My dishwasher 21 years old Maytag. Washer and dryer all Maytag. Even a "Nail Eater disposer "Maytag. My stove a 1938 O'Keefe & Merritt. Well you just can't beat them. I really miss it but still use the same business practice, such as wiping feet on a towel before entering and pads to work on. Customers really like it.

When I was in commercial laundry,  I was responsible for about 3000 commercial maytag sets of washers and dryers.   I did change quite a few pumps,  however,  that maytag, in my opinion,  was  absolutely the best washer ever made.    People used to beat the hell out of those in apartments,  but the machines held up GREAT!    Better than GE's,  the OLD Speed queens with the fluid drives (you old timers will remember those",  and the old General Motors built Frigidare's ,  which were a nightmare.   The belt drive whirlpools are a close second to the maytags, but I agree that the Maytags were the best.

I love those old maytag washers and halo of heat dryers-built like a tank.Went to factory school in Newton Iowa for a week in 1969 and sorry that they went out of business.

I don't think they went "out of business" but Whirlpool could sell 4-5 Whirlpool washers to 1 Maytag so they were "retired" It's all about the bottom line now. No more customer satisfaction just "where's the money"

I also think maytag made a lot of bad business decisions .When the economy was booming they bought a number of questionable companys like hoover and strayed from their core business. Then came the neptune washer disaster and lawsuits .I also think they were to generous a company ...gave too many concessions and had too long of a warranty .This all togethher did them in.I still loved and was proud to be associated with the original maytag company .Whirlpool ....not so much

Maytag went downhill when Lloyd Ward was the CEO. His told us he wanted Maytag to "own the home" and thats when they started acquiring other companies and lost their focus on what they did best. He wanted to have a Maytag kiosk in grocery stores. So we started selling Magic Chef washers under the Performa name and then came the Atlantis and finally those piece of junk Amanas as Maytags. People used to come into our store and say "Oh I always wanted a Maytag but I didn't think I could afford one". So they would buy a $299 Performa and think they had the best washer made.

It said Performa built BY Maytag. That's how salesmen got away with it. Look it's a Maytag!
