I don't think they went "out of business" but Whirlpool could sell 4-5 Whirlpool washers to 1 Maytag so they were "retired" It's all about the bottom line now. No more customer satisfaction just "where's the money"

I think when wards went bankrupt maytag had a lot of product in there stores and owed a lot of money and couldn't absorb it-then wp stepped in.

I also think maytag made a lot of bad business decisions .When the economy was booming they bought a number of questionable companys like hoover and strayed from their core business. Then came the neptune washer disaster and lawsuits .I also think they were to generous a company ...gave too many concessions and had too long of a warranty .This all togethher did them in.I still loved and was proud to be associated with the original maytag company .Whirlpool ....not so much

Maytag went downhill when Lloyd Ward was the CEO. His told us he wanted Maytag to "own the home" and thats when they started acquiring other companies and lost their focus on what they did best. He wanted to have a Maytag kiosk in grocery stores. So we started selling Magic Chef washers under the Performa name and then came the Atlantis and finally those piece of junk Amanas as Maytags. People used to come into our store and say "Oh I always wanted a Maytag but I didn't think I could afford one". So they would buy a $299 Performa and think they had the best washer made.

It said Performa built BY Maytag. That's how salesmen got away with it. Look it's a Maytag!

I went to factory school in the mid 70's /  all those people who built this great machine lost their jobs because they built a machine that was too good.     The machine had too long of a life span.    I convince people to fix these machines rather than get a new VMW or some other crap their making today.
