1950s vintage HotPoint Refrigerator repair assistance
« on: May 03, 2013, 09:56:06 AM »
All,

I am new to the vintage refrigerator repairing efforts....pretty much a novice.  I have a vintage 1950s HotPoint refrigerator that I have recently installed a A419 temp controller to accurately adjust/maintain the temp.  The issue I am having is the refrigerator will not cool lower than 42 degrees Fahrenheit.  I am thinking it may be an issue with low freon or the gasket seals on the fridge.  Any thoughts or suggestions?  Thank you.

Are the freezer coils fully frosted?  If not, you have a sealed system problem.  Not worth fixing unless you really like the fridge.

These older R12 refrigerators have rugged compressors that can still operate even after ingesting non-compressables. If the evaporator
is partially frozen and the compressor is not overheating might be worth it to re-charge.
This assumes the condensing fan is running and the condenser not clogged.

Can you even get R12 anymore?

Not sure how deep you wanted to go with restoring/repairing it, but I believe the guys that restore vintage appliances for a living would completely replace the sealed system along with painting it and replacing any broken hardware.

These guys do some amazing work.

R414B is a blend replacement, but probably pricey, comes in a 25 lb bottle, have to charge as a liquid. It has been my experience the old systems
always leaked on the high side, never had to purge system. Very rare to find a GE compressor running inefficiently.

I have a jug of R414 outside. You say it is a replacement for R-12? What do you mean you gotta charge as a liquid? Wouldn't that flood the captube?

You must charge as a liquid as the blend is 3 different gases that have different vapor pressures, charging as a gas will give you an inneficient
refrigerant mix. You just slowly charge so no liquid enters the system. Last I checked it was $300 a 25 lb bottle.
