sometimes it stops in the middle of a cycle
have to hit start button to re start

The lid switch is tricky on these. It is mechanically and electrically rigged. Sometime bumping the lid makes em work.

  Well, it may very well be an intermittent lid switch but this washer uses a magnetic lid switch. Nothing mechanical about it. You would have to cut the wires near the lid switch and splice them together to jump it out for testing. If it still fails, use a couple of crimp butt connectors to re-connect the switch and look elsewhere for the problem.

Bypass the lidswitch and see if the problem is solved is what I would try, if it fixes it replace the switch.

just a tip on the ge  lid switches        you can pry out the silicone,install a new 1 inch 200v reed switch that cost $1 on ebay and save a few bucks,with leads  soldered to reed before putting back in case and refill with new clear silcicone

just a update on this older ge           i had the intermittent operation problem on a service call and new magnetic type lid switch did not correct problem!     a work in progress
