GE refrigerator/freezer
« on: May 18, 2008, 11:57:48 PM »
It seems to run all the time. Sometimes fresh food freezing occurs. Cold control turned down to 2. It also drips water from freezer to fresh food section. There are 3 of these same units in apt. building with same problem. Possible thermostat and defrost drain tube?

Model TBX16SMCLAD

It maybe running all the time because the compressor is getting week or it's getting low on freon.

But if at times it freezes stuff in the refrigerator section then I would say it's more of a problem with the cold control/thermostat.

As for the water dripping from the freezer to the refrigerator I would check the drain tube first.

Will a frozen drain tube and drip pan affect the cooling process? It seems odd that 3 cold controls are bad unless that has been a problem with this model.

If I remember correctly, these have the rotary compressors in them. GE had issues for a few years with these and I changed out a lot of low-side assemblies on the TBX models.

Could you explain what is involved with changing out a low side assembly.

The low-side kit consists of the compressor, condenser and condenser fan assembly, all conveniently packaged together so it can basically slide into place. At one time, GE had these kits put together so that you could do this changeout quickly, with just 2 connections to solder. I do not know if this kit is still available, but it was a popular item back then, as there was a recall situation on those rotaries.
