Thermador PRD304EHC/01 Oven door glass and hinges
« on: March 23, 2013, 10:12:54 PM »
First, thank you for providing this great forum!

My poor father managed to nick the inner glass panel on his oven door, and during the subsequent self-cleaning it shattered.  I seem to be having some trouble locating a replacement; it is possible to simply order up a piece of tempered glass for a replacement?  Or is it possible to get coated glass made to size?   I took it apart and it measures 20-1/8" x 12" x 4mm thick.  There appears to be a second identical pane in there (there's actually 4 panes including the outside one) which has the IR coating.  I could turn that toward the inside if I had to get a piece of clear.

Also, the hinges on the stove were never great.  The door hangs open to the point where the self-cleaning latch just barley catches it.  I see they are no longer available, though the sockets are.  Does anyone know if there's a way to upgrade them at all?  repairclinic.com has a picture of them ( p/n 1385045 ); I don't know if it's ok to link to those guys here.  If there isn't I'll try to come up with some way of beefing them up.  I've fiddled with them before but didn't get very far.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

I see Bosch doesn't want to sell just the glass, but will sell you the whole door for $1100. I would talk to a glass shop and see what they can do for you.  Since it's tempered it will have to be made to order, it can't be cut from stock.  I found a sub for the door hinge, 651284 repair set, includes two hinges and a door gasket.

I have replaced the glass in several doors no longer made. Uses the same ceramic glass used in wood burning stoves. Beware it is pricey. Last glass about 9x16 was $125.00. The older stoves such as manual clean were less, as not as high temperature rating.

Thanks for all the help!

I wasn't sure if the $1100 "panel" was for just the front trim (which has a silk-screened, black dotted glass taped onto it) or included everything.

I heard about that special woodstove glass, but wasn't sure it was necessary.  Thanks so much for the clarification theoldstoveguy.  My father loves the stove for cooking, so I won't be cheaping out on the repair.  But I would rather spend $200 than $1100.  (Who wouldn't?)  For now I've got him going with the one remaining pane of high temperature glass with instructions to not use self-cleaning or very high temperatures.  It seemed OK to me on bake & broil; nothing important got very warm.

That hinge kit is cheap enough I'll give it a try and report back.  I suspect the original hinges got beat up due to some original assembly problem.  I can't remember now but the door kept falling off until I found something was screwed up with the original hinge installation.  For the life of me I don't remember what exactly it was; something like screws were missing or something obvious like that.

Looks like appliancepartspro.com doesn't ship to Canada.  Oh well, will have to hunt around.

(For work I'm currently hunting for some quartz panes.  Makes the high temperature glass seem like a real bargain!)

No worries, I noticed that myself.  (I guessed they supported the site somehow since my part numbers automatically linked to them).

I will use them in the future though.  Looks like they got that prepaid Canadian taxes thing worked out, which makes the parts show up in a few days rather than a few weeks.  Very nice!

The local mom&pop glass place looks like they're into woodstove glass, so they might be able to help.
